From a holiday search to a useful travel experience.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday were more than dates on a content calendar. The work connected seasonal demand, useful destinations and a next step into the travel product.
Career evidence · historicalSearch estimates · contextualReviewed 29 September 2026
The opportunity
Meet the traveler’s question before the flight search.
Someone searching for Black Friday flight deals may still be deciding where to go, which airlines to consider, or whether an offer is useful. A core flight-search page and an editorial guide serve different moments in that decision.
The seasonal program addressed that gap: create destinations around the questions people were asking, keep the information useful through the buying window, and connect the answer to a relevant product action. It brought search demand, editorial planning and implementation into the same conversation.
The broader question was how editorial acquisition could complement Skyscanner’s programmatic flight-page footprint. The historical record supports a program that evolved over multiple seasons—not a claim that one article or one person caused the domain’s growth.
Contribution and context
Search judgment, connected to delivery.
My contribution
As SEO Lead, Americas, my remit covered regional SEO strategy, localized page opportunities, demand analysis and growth prioritization. I describe my role in this program as leading acquisition planning and regional collaboration.
The program-specific leadership account is firsthand. The retained decks establish team activity, not independent proof of sole authorship.
Team and system delivery
Editorial, regional and technical work combined campaign destinations, broader airline-oriented coverage and ways to move from information into search. Supporting deal-feed and search-control work made those product connections concrete.
A described feed cadence does not establish that every holiday page used that feed.
What the evidence establishes
Retained planning and handoff material documents the approach and its evolution. Separately collected search estimates let you inspect domain, folder and individual-path context.
Neither source proves incremental revenue, sole individual impact or that today’s AI-search services produced these historical results.
Program evolution
Build once. Learn. Improve the next season.
2016 · reported activity
Establish the seasonal destinations
Start with the holiday buying questions and a useful place for search visitors to land.
2017 · reported activity
Broaden relevant coverage
Develop the page family and coordinate supporting search, paid and social activity.
2018 · proposed expansion
Plan the next iteration
Retained expansion ideas are planning evidence. They are not relabeled as confirmed delivery.
A separate airline-page initiative and supporting deal infrastructure add context, but their dates and page-level adoption cannot be assigned to the holiday program by assumption. Precise historical page counts are omitted from this public candidate pending source-context and disclosure approval.
Inspect the context
One domain. An editorial section. Different questions.
The domain chart shows the wider search footprint. The next chart isolates the retained Tips & Inspiration path. Neither estimates James’s individual impact.

The folder is part of the domain, not additional traffic. It is not the complete historical editorial estate: legacy /news/ paths and later URL migrations are not fully reconciled. These are Semrush estimates, not first-party visits, bookings or incremental growth. Returned zeroes do not prove that pages did not exist.
Which pages contributed? Explore the selected 132-URL cohort
This is a selected group of historical paths, not the full news-site inventory. Family labels are inferred from URL wording, except the two documented campaign hubs; those are not independently verified original launch pages. Old-path histories are not stitched to successor URLs.

Zero-based bars. Families are mutually exclusive; values sum to 507,477 for the selected URLs, not to the folder estimate.
These remain a fixed two-page comparison, independent of the family filter. Monthly estimates cannot isolate Black Friday–Cyber Monday weekend traffic.

Sources, dates and interpretation
Source: retained Semrush resource_rank_history observations, US database, retrieved 2026-09-23–24. The displayed dates preserve the provider’s monthly observation dates; they are not daily measurements. Extended 2020 history is travel-market context, not a clean post-tenure comparison.
Missing observations remain unavailable. No first-party analytics, campaign revenue or complete historical CMS inventory is supplied here. Page estimates cannot establish authorship or incremental impact. Source files and employer material remain private; only this bounded display projection is proposed for release.
What carries forward
Useful coverage is an operating process.
The transferable lesson is to connect demand to a page people can use, then connect that page to the next action. That requires more than finding a keyword: content scope, technical access, internal links, ownership, freshness and measurement all shape the delivered experience.
The charts provide context for that conversation. They do not isolate campaign incrementality or explain every movement. The selected cohort helps examine concentration and seasonal patterns without pretending it is the full editorial inventory.
For a current engagement, I start with the business question and the existing evidence. The next step might be a technical repair, a stronger page family, a reporting correction or an experiment—not necessarily more content.
